MSCR -Recreation Specialist (Adapted, Aquatics & Sports) – 1.0 FTE
Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.
As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!
Purpose of Position: The purpose of this position is to develop, promote, implement and supervise a variety of adapted and adult aquatics programs with additional responsibilities managing recreational sports programs (primarily tennis).
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervise a number of part-time, seasonal employees that work in MSCR programs throughout the year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include planning, implementing, and supervising year-round adapted and adult aquatics programs and effectively supervising program staff. The following duties are normal for this position and are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties will be required and assigned.
Research, plan, develop and schedule a variety of recreational classes and events in the adapted, adult aquatics and tennis programs.
Create and modify recreational opportunities to serve individuals with varying types of disabilities.
Recruit, hire, schedule, supervise and evaluate lifeguards and instructors.
Plan and lead staff training including staff in-services, lifeguard and CPR instruction.
Conduct evening and weekend program visits to observe and evaluate staff and program delivery and effectiveness.
Maintain knowledge of existing safety codes related to aquatic program operations and staff certifications.
Familiarity with The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and accessibility issues.
Research, purchase, organize, maintain and distribute equipment and supplies.
Work with Marketing Specialist to prepare information for seasonal program guides and to promote programs and events.
Assist with the development of program budgets and monitor expenditures and revenue.
Collaborate with the outreach team to develop strategies to increase and maintain diversified enrollment.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program personnel, other MSCR staff, MMSD staff, the public and community organizations.
Work closely with the American Red Cross to maintain course records and personnel certifications.
Track participation statistics, maintain records, develop and submit required reports.
Monitor and approve employee payroll.
Maintain AED’s and CPR equipment for MSCR programs.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, therapeutic recreation, health science area (kinesiology, exercise science, health education, recreation administration, sports, or related field) or related field, and a minimum of three years of full-time experience coordinating, implementing and supervising recreation programs, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Previous experience supervising staff and volunteers.
Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work under tight deadlines, and use effective time management.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele and staff, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of aquatics safety codes, laws and best practices.
Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Ability to problem solve.
Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work towards improving one’s own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise and having the desire to learn in these areas.
Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Suite.
License Requirements:
Ability to obtain & maintain the following American Red Cross certifications within the first 6 months of employment
Lifeguard (LG)
CPR for the Professional Rescuer
Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
Valid Driver’s License
Desired Qualifications
Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT)
Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Working Conditions:
Flexible work schedule may include working Monday through Friday, with flexible work hours between the hours of 8:30am and 5:30pm, some evenings and weekends as assigned by supervisor or dictated by program needs.
Physical Requirements:
Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, twenty to fifty pounds.
Ability to operate a variety of office equipment (personal computer, phone, fax, copier).
Tasks are regularly performed in safe and comfortable surroundings without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical requirements also include passing the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training pre-course swimming pre-requisites to obtain necessary certifications within the first six months of employment.
