La Follette High School’s spectator gym is buzzing with activity and a piece of its storied past is playing a vital role, thanks to a unique collaboration between MSCR and the La Follette Athletic Department. This project goes beyond simple functionality, weaving together history, sustainability and the dedication of skilled hands.
Following the recent high school construction, a wealth of aged wood from the former spectator gym bleachers floor well was destined for repurposing. Enter MSCR Shop Manager and Carpenter Jim Hass, a 1987 East graduate with a decade of experience at La Follette, and Athletic Director Scott Swanson, a proud 2002 La Follette alumnus. Together, they embarked on a project to transform these historic planks into something both practical and meaningful.
Hass meticulously crafted 14 new benches from the 60+ year old wood. The result? Sturdy, beautiful, polished benches that showcase La Follette pride.
These benches are more than just seating; they’re a testament to sustainable practices and the preservation of La Follette’s legacy. They’re being utilized for a wide range of events, from La Follette sport competitions and MSCR activities like after school programs and adult sports leagues.
The project has also proven to be a significant time-saver for La Follette staff and custodians, streamlining setup for classes and events. But perhaps most importantly, it serves as a powerful teachable moment for students, demonstrating the value of environmentally sound practices and the importance of honoring history.
This collaboration underscores the vital role of MSCR in our community. This year alone, MSCR has served over 4,000 participants in adult sports leagues and more than 2,000 in after school middle and high school leagues, all taking place in MMSD school athletic facilities. The expansion of high school gym spaces is crucial to meet the growing demands of both school-day activities and the ever-expanding MSCR programs that benefit individuals of all ages.
By repurposing materials and combining skilled craftsmanship with a dedication to community, MSCR and La Follette have created a lasting legacy. These benches stand as a symbol of the past, present and future, reminding us that even the oldest materials can be given new life, enriching our community for generations to come.
